STORM TAKE HEARTBREAKING DEFEAT AGAINST CARDIFF
The table topping Cardiff Devils were the visitors on Saturday night at the Storm Shelter. Both teams having had two wins each in their most recent fixtures.
A dream start for the Storm, after just 25 seconds, saw a turnover in the neutral zone swept up by Durflinger who fed Johnson with an accurate pass which left the former time to pick his spot and beat Burman down low. Chances at both ends of the ice were not capitalised on by either team despite several opportunities on the powerplay. A fairly balanced first period ended with a 1-0 advantage the Storm.
Another quick and impactful start for the Storm was rewarded with another early goal which doubled their lead. It was D’Aoust who darted up the left wing and fired a well-placed shot from just outside of the face-off circle. Some outstanding goal tending and team defence by the home side restricted any golden chances for the Devils. However, their pressure finally paid off when a low shot from Mosey through traffic trickled past Weninger to half the deficit. Just a few minutes later the score was level at 2 a piece when MacWilliam combined with Macdonald setting up a tense final period.
The Storm had a big chance to regain the lead just a couple of minutes in when they were awarded a penalty shot but Hughes failed to capitalise shooting just wide of the near post. Moments later the Devils completed the comeback, scoring through Donaghey, to take the lead for the first time in the game. The home side ramped up the tempo in the later stages of the game seeing chance after chance turned away by the Devils. Despite replacing Weninger with the extra forward the Storm simply ran out of time to find the equalising goal, leaving a hard fought 2 points for the visitors.
