The Goodwin Group Manchester Storm played host to bitter rivals Sheffield Steelers in their second league encounter of the weekend. This time it was the hosts that came out victorious with the 4-3 scoreline.

An evenly contested opening period saw a good number of scoring chances created by both sides. However, it was the visitors that got on the scoresheet first. A speculative wrist shot from the point ricocheted off a Storm skater and handed the Yorkshire outfit the opening goal of the game.

The slender advantage did not last, as it was the hosts’ turn to profit from a bounce of the puck. A heads-up play from Ulmer put something on-goal and Mario Puskarich was well-placed to backhand the puck across the line at 25:13. After battling back to parity the hosts took advantage of a powerplay opportunity. A deflected puck again resulted in a goal, as Hughesman’s effort changed direction and beat a hapless Duba in goal. Although, this wasn’t the end of the second period scoring. A breakdown in defensive coverage enabled Steelers’ Connolly to convert his own rebound and tie the game back up at 2-2 with just over 9 minutes remaining in the second period.

The final stanza started at a ferocious pace with both sides evidently desperate for the two points. A sustained period of pressure from hosts eventually resulted in a goal, as Ulmer seized on a loose puck in the slot and fired Storm into the lead.

An ill-disciplined penalty given up by Connolly cost the Steelers dearly, as Hughesman sealed his brace on the man advantage. The 4-2 scoreline, in favour of the Storm, appeared to be lasting until the final buzzer until a sudden moment of brilliance by DeLuca brought Sheffield within one.

A tense last couple of minutes saw the hosts clinging on at times, but Storm’s defence stood tall as they secured the much needed victory.
