Your Go Goodwins Manchester Storm came away from their first competitive meeting with the Sheffield Steelers this season, with a 3-6 loss at home in the Challenge Cup.
Despite dominating much of the opening minutes of the game, the Storm were unable to find a way past Ervins “Moose” Mustukovs in the Steelers net. End to end hockey soon followed, but the Steelers were the first to get on the board, with Mathieu Roy grabbing a power play goal with 14:31 played in the period. Just over a minute later, the Steelers doubled their lead, with Colton Fretter grabbing another power play goal. The period was closed out with some fantastic Storm efforts on the Steelers net, but once again, Moose proved too difficult to break!
The Steelers were able to get off the mark quickest in the 2nd period, with Robert Dowd grabbing the third unanswered goal for the Steelers, this time at full strength. Continued pressure from Storm however, finally paid off, when Dallas Ehrhardt slotted home, much to the delight of the home crowd! Less than 2 minutes later, the Storm fans were once again on their feet, when Ryan Trenz scored off of a Chris Auger assist, right past Mustukovs. With the tension rising on the ice, multiple fights broke out on the ice, including one between Storm’s Matt Stanisz & the Steelers Tim Wallace, and moments later another between Storm’s Ciaran Long & Sheffield’s Fretter. With 56 seconds remaining in the period, Andreas Valdix was able to cover from a Ben O’Connor assist, to restore the Steelers 2 goal lead.
Chris Auger, with 3:33 played in the 3rd, produced a beautiful short handed goal for Storm, breaking a way single handily and slotting past Mustukovs, for an early contender of “goal of the season”. The play flowed end to end after this, with Storm controlling much of the possession and recording more shots on goal. However, following a “freak bounce” the Steelers Brandy Ramsay secured their 5th of the night, with a breakaway effort. This was followed, with 2:21 left in the game, by a Jonas Westerling goal to secure the win for the visiting Yorkshiremen.
Storm now look ahead to their first league fixture, away at the Coventry Baze tomorrow, before welcoming them to the Storm Shelter next Saturday (15th) evening, 7pm. They then welcome the MK Lightning for their first visit to the Shelter, on Sunday the 16th at 5:30pm.
