It’s a special night at the Storm Shelter this Sunday as Mike Morin’s number 15 jersey is raised to the rafters before the Storm face the Milton Keynes Lightning in a Patton Conference game that faces off at 5:30 pm.
The sides had contrasting fortunes on Saturday night, as the Storm travelled to Sheffield and the Lightning hosted the Coventry Blaze. It was a 3-1 loss for Manchester against the Steelers, with Ciaran Long getting Storm’s solitary goal in the game. Milton Keynes required overtime against Coventry, but were able to secure both points thanks to a Paul Phillips goal 3:33 into the extra period. Kevin King grabbed a double, while Tommy Mele and Gui Doucet each scored one goal in a game that ended 4-4 in regulation.
The Patton conference is looking tight already this early into the season. Storm sit top of the conference with 8 points from 8 games, 2 points ahead of Coventry who have 4 games in hand. MK sit a further 2 points behind in third, having played 5 games. Guildford round out the conference with 3 points from 3 games.
The Storm and Lightning have faced off 4 times already this season, with the games being won by the home side in each game. Storm winning 6-2 and 6-0 at home, while Lightning have won 3-2 both times at home. Dane Byers and Mike Hammond have top-scored for the Storm in the 4 games, both grabbing 6 points. King, Denny Kearney, and Lewis Hook each have 3 points in the games, and make up the top-scorers for MK.
After 6 seasons as a Storm player, and in his third season as Assistant Coach, Mike Morin is having his shirt retired prior to the game. Mike played 258 league games, 42 playoff games, 47 Benson and Hedges Cup games, and 22 European games for the Storm and has been a firm fan’s favourite during his playing and coaching career for the Storm. Make sure you get to the Storm Shelter this afternoon to celebrate a true Storm legend.
One to watch: After joining as injury cover, netminder Miika Wiikman has now cemented his position as starter for the Lightning. His impressive performances have given MK a chance to win every night.
