Your Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm travel to Sheffield this Saturday to take on the Steelers in Challenge Cup action, facing off at 7:00 pm.
Cup Qualification in the balance: Qualification for the next round of the Challenge Cup has been guaranteed for the Steelers, who have won all of their 5 Cup fixtures. Storm require two victories in their final two matches to secure their progression to quarter finals, anything less will see the Dundee Stars take the final quarter final position.
Steelers mid-week victory: The Steelers faced a depleted Dundee team on Wednesday in ICE Sheffield, winning a high-scoring game 8-2. The goals were shared around the team, with Aarssen, Jamtin, Valdix, Jonathan Phillips, Dowd, Nelson, and O’Connor getting a goal each. Both sides had a single game last weekend, Storm losing in penalty shots against Dundee and Sheffield going down 3-2 in Cardiff. Goals from Ehrhardt, Beca, Hammond, and Pitt were not enough to secure both points for the Storm as the Stars finally won after 6 penalty shots each. Sheffield’s goals on Saturday came from Valdix and Aarssen, but they could not find a game-tying goal.
Last meeting: This is the second meeting between the sides this season, both coming in the Challenge Cup. The teams last faced off in early September in the Storm Shelter in a game that swung one way and then the other. Steelers raced to a 3-0 lead courtesy of Roy, Fretter, and Dowd markers. Storm fought back thanks to Ehrhardt and Auger, before Valdix and Auger traded goals. The Steelers secured both points on the night through late Roy and Westerling goals. Both Mustukovs and Clemente made 23 saves in the battle of the netminders.
One to watch: Top scoring for the Steelers this season is John Armstrong, who has 14 goals and 11 assists from 22 games. The Ontario-native has had an impressive start to the season, continuing last season’s good form.
