This Saturday sees your Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm take the long trip to Kirkcaldy to take on the Fife Flyers in a 7:15 pm faceoff.
The Flyers have had injury troubles recently, and were missing Andy Iles, Ian Young, Dan Correale, and Danick Gauthier in last weekend’s game against the Sheffield Steelers, a game the Steelers went on to win 8-1. James Isaacs grabbed the solitary Flyers goal on Sunday night and Jordan Marr replaced the injured Iles in nets after just 1:16. Saturday night was a completely different story for the Flyers as they beat the Panthers at home in a shootout. A Carlo Finucci hattrick and one from former Storm defenceman Ricards Birzins took the game into overtime, and Peter LeBlanc scored the only penalty shot for the Gardiner conference champions. It was a similar story for the Storm last weekend, as they beat the Devils at home on Saturday before going down in Surrey against the Flames. Goals from Matt Stanisz, Dane Byers, and Ciaran Long put Saturday’s game out of reach of the Devils, while Mike Clemente made 41 saves in nets. Dane Byers scored solitary goal on Sunday night as the Storm went down in Guildford.
With just 4 weekends left in the regular season, the race for the top few positions is still tight. The Storm currently sat in second position, 3 points ahead of the Giants, and just 5 points ahead of the Flyers who have 4 games in hand. The Flyers and the Storm have only met each other twice this season, with each game going the way of the home side. Fife travelled to Altrincham in October in a game that ended 3-2 in favour of the Storm. The return game ended 6-2 to the Flyers just after the new year. Four Storm players have 2 points each against the Flyers. Ciaran Long, Mike Hammond, and Luke Moffatt have picked up 1 goal and 1 assist against the Flyers, while Matt Stanisz has 2 assists. For the Flyers, Ian Young, Ricards Birzins, Shayne Stockton, and Liam Heelis each have 1 goal and 2 assists against the Storm.
One to watch: Carlo Finucci has been quietly picking up points for the past 2 seasons for the Flyers, and has already scored 21 goals this season.
