Manchester Storm’s 24/25 Retro Night: A Touching Celebration of the Impressive 2017/2018 Season
Sunday 23rd March 2025, the Manchester Storm will take fans on a trip down memory lane, bringing back the excitement and nostalgia of the 2017/2018 season for our 24/25 Retro Night. The night promises to be a heartfelt nod to a team that not only achieved incredible success but also holds a special place in the hearts of many fans and players alike.
The 2017/2018 season was a significant milestone for the Storm, securing an impressive second place finish in the Elite League standings, showcasing the club’s growth and determination. With electrifying performances and unforgettable moments, that season cemented itself as one of the most memorable in the team’s history.
Additionally, the evening will serve as a time to honour those who have passed away, recognising the players and individuals who have been integral to the Storm’s journey but are no longer with us.
A standout player from that remarkable season was Mike Hammond. Affectionately known as ‘Hammy,’ he was nothing short of extraordinary, finishing as the top points scorer in the EIHL with an impressive 90 points in 62 games. His impact on the team’s success was immense, as he became a beloved figure among fans and a crucial player on the ice.
Hammy was not just a prolific scorer; he was a leader, an inspiration, and an essential part of the team’s achievements that season. During the upcoming Retro Night, the Storm will take the opportunity to honor his legacy, celebrating a player who brought immense joy to the Shelter and the broader Storm community.
The Manchester Storm also wish to commemorate the life of David Sutherland, affectionately known as “Pops.” A cherished figure within the team, Pops was a constant presence, from the early days at the Arena to Altrincham. His infectious stories made every trip to the rink a joy, and his legendary sausage rolls became a beloved tradition, always shared as a reward for the team’s successful weekends.
While the event will celebrate the joyous moments, it will also reflect on the spirit of those we have lost and express gratitude for their contributions to the club.
Ryan Finnerty, Manchester Storm General Manager, shared his thoughts on our 24/25 Retro Night: “I knew Mike since he was a young kid in Victoria, BC. Even then, his incredible talent was clear, though he was a late bloomer in hockey. Later, while coaching in Glasgow, I had the opportunity to sign him. He transformed from a kid we took a chance on into the league’s leading scorer. We are incredibly proud of his achievements and cherish the memories of his contributions to the organisation. Mike is still a very popular player amongst our supporters and will be remembered for his amazing contributions to our club.
Pops holds a special place in our hearts, and we’re honored to celebrate his time, energy, and passion for the club. He made coming to the rink enjoyable with his endless stories and rewarded the guys with his famous sausage rolls after successful weekends.
I hope everyone enjoys the game as we reflect on an incredible season filled with memorable moments, and, more importantly, remember those who are no longer with us.”
Fans can expect to see a night full of commemorations, highlighting the legacies of Pops and Hammy alongside the team’s accomplishments. This event will provide an opportunity for fans to reflect on the successes of the 2017/2018 season while celebrating the bonds and memories that define the Storm family. As the Storm prepare for this memorable night in the Shelter, it is set to be a heartfelt occasion, brimming with nostalgia, pride, and gratitude for a season that remains cherished by Manchester Storm supporters.
