Cam Critchlow: Leading by Example
For Manchester Storm forward Cam Critchlow, hockey has always been about more than just the game—it’s about leadership, resilience, and embracing every challenge head-on. From captaining the Halifax Mooseheads to representing Team GB on the international stage, Critchlow has built a career on hard work and determination.
In our recent conversation, he reflected on his journey, his time playing alongside future NHL stars, and the lessons that have shaped him both on and off the ice.
Born in PEI, Raised in Nova Scotia
– Halifax Mooseheads
Born in Prince Edward Island but raised in Nova Scotia, Critchlow’s hockey journey was shaped by the strong hockey culture of the Maritimes. “Growing up in the Maritimes, hockey is everything,” he said. “The rinks, the communities, the support—it’s something special.”
From an early age, he learned the value of hard work and perseverance, traits that would define his career as he climbed the ranks through junior and professional hockey.
Learning from the Best

Critchlow’s path to professional hockey saw him take on a leadership role early. His time in the QMJHL with the Halifax Mooseheads was a defining chapter, one that put him in the same dressing room as two of the sport’s most electrifying talents—Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin.
“It was special,” Critchlow recalled. “Even back then, you could see how talented they were. The speed, the skill—it was on another level. But what stood out was their work ethic. They were relentless, and that pushed everyone around them to be better.”
That experience, combined with his natural leadership qualities, saw him take on the captaincy—a role he embraced as a chance to set the standard for his teammates.
Going Toe-to-Toe with an NHL All-Star
Throughout his career, Critchlow has faced his fair share of elite competition, but when asked about the best player he’s ever played against, one name stood out—Claude Giroux.
“Giroux was unbelievable,” he said. “He had this ability to slow the game down and make plays that no one else could see. His skill, his vision—he just made things happen every time he was on the ice.”
Representing Team GB on the Big Stage

More recently, Critchlow has had the honour of representing Great Britain at the international level, an experience he cherishes. Though born and raised in Canada, Cam was granted citizenship and the opportunity to represent Great Britain through his father, who was born in the UK. One of the standout moments for Critchlow was facing off against Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Championship—a game that put him directly up against the newest NHL superstar, Connor Bedard.
“It was crazy,” Critchlow said. “You hear all the hype about Bedard, but until you see him on the ice, you don’t fully appreciate just how good he is. His edge work, the way he moves with the puck—it’s ridiculous. There were moments where he just made guys look silly. Playing against him and that entire Canada roster was an unreal experience.”
The Little Things Matter
When it comes to game-day routines, Critchlow keeps things simple but focused. “I’m not overly superstitious,” he admitted, “but I like to stick to my habits—get in a good warm-up, have my coffee, and just get mentally locked in.”
Away from the rink, he enjoys spending time with teammates and taking in the Manchester atmosphere. “It’s a great city,” he said. “The fans, the people around the club—it’s a fantastic place to play.”
Looking Ahead
As the season progresses, Critchlow remains a key piece of the Storm’s puzzle, bringing energy, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the team.
“This is a great group,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of character in this room, and we’re going to keep pushing for success.”
With his experience, determination, and leadership, Cam Critchlow continues to set the tone for Manchester Storm—one shift at a time.
