Your Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm are back on home ice this Sunday 1st October as the Belfast Giants take the trip to Altrincham in an Elite League game that faces off at 5:30pm.
Challenge Cup blues: Both sides were in Challenge Cup action on Saturday, but both teams went down in tight matches. Belfast welcomed the new look Edinburgh Capitals to the SSE Arena in a high-scoring affair that ended 6-4 in favour of the Scottish side. Brendan Connolly, Jonathan Ferland, Darcy Murphy, and John Kurtz getting the Giants’ goals, while Andrew Dickson made 24 saves in nets. Despite the Giants having 55 shots on goal they could not find the game-tying-goal and conceded a late empty-net marker. The Storm traveled to Nottingham for a tight Challenge Cup encounter against the Panthers, but went down 3-2. Matt Beca and Dane Byers grabbing the goals on the night, with Clemente turning away 37 shots in an impressive performance.
New look Giants: It was a summer of change for the Giants, as Coach Adam Keefe took over the reins from Derrick Walser. Keefe has built a side with a balance of physicality and skill. Big bodies Ryan Martinelli, Spiros Goulakos, and John Kurtz, who has already shown a goalscoring touch, are joined by the skill of Sebastien Sylvestre and Darcy Murphy. Keefe also managed to retain last season’s British core including netminding duo Jackson Whistle and Stephen Murphy as well as Colin Shields and Matt Towe.
One to watch: Jonathan Ferland joins the Giants after captaining the Vienna Capitals to the EBEL playoff title, without losing a game along the way. The experienced forward is equally adept at playmaking and goalscoring and brings a wealth of experience to the Giants side.
