Manchester Pride descended upon the #StormShelter this evening, when your Go Goodwins Manchester Storm skated away from their home exhibition game against the Sheffield Steelers with a 4-2 win!
The game, which saw Storm taking to the ice in special #Pride jerseys, followed the thrilling 5-4 loss on Saturday to the Steelers, and the Storm were out for revenge. With Linden Springer suspended for 1 game, and Shane Bakker out with injury, Storm needed to give 100% all 3 periods to ensure they came away with the W against the 2017 PlayOff champions!
The first period saw plenty of chances go each way, with Storm controlling much of the play. Yet despite the possession and chances, they were unable to pass Brad Day in the Steelers net. Heavy hits, both along the boards and on open ice, were delivered by the home side, against the Steelers.
However, with the clock ticking down in the period, the deadlock was broken, when Chris Auger grabbed his 1st of the night, with 50 seconds to go in the period. Storm then doubled their lead, 25 seconds later, with Dallas Ehrhardt going through the 5-hole of Day to give the Storm a 2-0 lead going into the 1st intermission.
The Steelers came out into the 2nd fired up, and capitalised on some less than fantastic defence from Storm, to grab their opening goal with 1:18 played in the period. When Ben O’Connor slotted home past Clemente, via the post.
Both sets of teams saw heavy hits going either way, and Fitzgerald and Storm Captain Jay Rosehill came to blows behind the Storm net, before the Steelers grabbed their 2nd of the night, when Ben O’Connor grabbed the Steelers, and his, second of the night, with 13:34 played in the period. With the scores tied, and the play flowing end to end, neither side looked to score – but Chris Auger changed all that, grabbing the Storm’s 3rd (and his 2nd of the evening, 4th of the weekend) with a beautiful shot past Day.
The tempo continued into the third, with neither side looking to give up. The play flowed end to end, with both sides looking to take the next goal. A few big hits along the boards saw the Storm beginning to assert their physicality over the Yorkshire team, and with just shy of 10 minutes left in the period, Mike Hammond blasted home with a laser to double the Storm’s lead over the Steelers, going top shelf!
The Steelers continued to battle hard for a third goal, but the Storm’s defence & netminder Clemente, was able to deny any chance of that happening! With the Storm coming away from the evening with that all important first win of the 2017/18 season.
Attention now turns to Wednesday game against the Coventry Blaze, which sees Adults being able to get in for £10 & children/concessions/students getting in for a £5. Tickets are on sale at the box-office and can also be bought online via the Storm website.
