Your Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm take the short hop across the Pennines as they face the Sheffield Steelers this Saturday 26th August, with face off at 7:00 pm.

Both sides’ pre-season are well underway, and this weekend’s games provides both coaches another opportunity to make tweaks to their lineups before the regular season gets started. Storm’s pre-season began with a trip to Coventry in mid-week, with Matt Bissonnette, Mike Hammond, and Shane Bakker all getting powerplay goals in the first period. Coventry fought back to take the game to overtime after the game ended 3-3 in regulation. A late penalty shot was scored by Ryan Dingle to give the Blaze a 4-3 victory. Despite the scoreline, it was a game full of positives for the new-look Storm side.

Sheffield kicked off their pre-season with a double-header against Swedish Allsvenskan side Sodertalje, splitting the series 4-2 and 3-1. Last weekend, the Steelers faced German DEL side Nurnberg Ice Tigers, going down 4-2 and 4-3 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The Yorkshire side retained a large core of last season’s squad, with 14 players returning for another year. Coming into the Steelers’ squad are former Braehead Clan defenceman Scott Aarssen, Mark Matheson, Joonas Ronnberg, former Blaze forward Matt Marquardt, Brady Ramsay, Tim Wallace, Jonas Westerling, and Kieran Brown. The 16-yr old British forward joins after spending two seasons in Iowa after a junior career in Bradford.

Sheffield picked up some injuries over the past few weeks, and early indications are that John Armstrong and Matt Marquardt will both be missing from this weekend’s games, with Marquardt potentially being out for some time. With these injuries, it’s likely youngsters Liam Kirk, Cole Shudra, and Kieran Brown will get some extra icetime. Gerard Hanson missed Wednesday’s game in Coventry, but there’s no news on whether he will be joining the lineup in Sheffield.

It looks as though it’s going to be a busy evening in the Sheffield Arena, and this weekend’s games provide the first opportunities for one of the sides to get early bragging rights over their closest rivals. For fans not making the trip, the game will be webcast on https://sheffieldsteelers.tv/.

One to watch: Levi Nelson scored the game-winning-goal in the playoff final, and has looked sharp in pre-season already, recreating the chemistry with linemates Robert Dowd and Andreas Valdix
