A very special item made its way across the Atlantic Ocean this week, from a man fondly remembered by not just original Manchester Storm fans, but hockey fans in general across the UK.
Former Storm goaltender, and now 2 time winning Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks, Mark Bernard, reached out to Storm GM Neil Russell, looking to help with the Manchester Fund.
“Bernie”, who is the Director of Hockey Administration for the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL & GM of the AHL Rockford Ice Hogs, was touched by the recent horrific events at the Manchester Arena, and when he saw the whole of Manchester hockey coming together to raise cash, he got straight on the phone!
Storm GM, Neil Russell, talks about the call he received from Bernie:
“It was a call out of the blue if truth be told, but Mark was adamant he wanted to do something to help raise some cash for the Manchester Fund. We spoke for over an hour on the phone, and he regaled some great stories about his time in Manchester with the original Storm, and how those days were right up there with the very best of his playing career. He has kindly sent a signed Blackhawks jersey of NHL superstar, Duncan Keith, which we will be auctioning off to raise some further money for the fund. I would like to thank Mark publicly for contacting us and playing his part from the other side of the world. His passion for UK hockey still burns very brightly.”
The jersey will be put up on an online auction, along with the game jerseys, next week.
