Your Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm are back in action at the Storm Shelter this Sunday for the final time of the season, as the Cardiff Devils are in town in the second leg of the playoff quarter finals in a 5:30 pm faceoff.
The equation is simple for both sides, Storm need a 2-goal victory to go through, Devils need a victory or a draw. A 1-goal victory for the Storm sees the game go to overtime. The prize on offer is a place in the Final Four weekend in Nottingham next weekend, and the opportunity to fight for the playoff trophy. An early summer holiday is on the cards for the losing side.
A tense night in Cardiff: It was a tight game in Cardiff last night, as the Devils came out on top 3-2. Patrick Asselin got the scoring underway in the first period, with assists going to Fournier and Haddad. Storm got in front in the second period thanks to Connor Varley and Mark Heatley. A third period fightback ensued from the Devils, and they retook the lead with goals from Haddad and Scott Hotham and this was enough to secure the victory.
Playoff scores around the league: It’s tight across the board in the playoff quarter finals. North of the border, Dundee came out on top 3-1 against the Braehead Clan in all Scottish affair. The Flyers travelled to Belfast but it was the Giants who were victorious 4-2, while Nottingham have the advantage over rivals Sheffield, taking the home leg 5-2.
Another tight game on the cards this evening?: Devils’ trips to the Shelter have been tight games this season, however the Welsh side have come away victorious in both league games. The first meeting saw a Connor Varley double take the game to overtime, before a Joey Martin goal secured victory for the Devils. It was a busy night for Mike Clemente, who turned away 41 Cardiff shots. Joey Haddad and Layne Ulmer got the other Devils goals on the night. The last meeting between the sides saw the Storm fall short in early March, Darian Dziurzynski and Mark Heatley setting up a tense last few minutes as the score was reduced to 3-2 in favour of the Devils, but Joey Haddad scored a late empty net goal in a 4-2 victory. Andrew Lord, Sean Bentivoglio, and Patrick Asselin with the other Devils goals.
Last home game of the season: This will be the final home game of the season for the Storm, so let’s pack out the Shelter and be the extra man!
