Your Go Goodwins Manchester Storm got back to winning ways this evening, when they SHUTOUT fellow playoff spot rivals, the Edinburgh Capitals, 4-0 in front of a good crowd at SilverBlades Ice Rink Altrincham!
The Storm dominated the opening minutes of the first period, causing Travis Fullerton in the Capitals net all kinds of trouble. The deadlock was broken with 11:46 left to play in the period, when Storm’s #26, Darian Dziurzynski slotted home for the games opening goal from a fantastic pass by Cody Cartier! This was quickly followed up by Storm’s and Dziurzynski’s 2nd, with 6:56 left to play in the period, once again following a brilliant assist from Cartier, to put the home side up 2-0. The play flowed end to end for the rest of the period, and despite the Capitals best efforts, Storm’s net miner Mike Clemente stood on his head and killed the period off with no goals going past him.
A goalless second period saw both sides going close, but impressive saves by both net minders kept the playoff rivals out of the back of the net. Tempers also began to flair, with heated words exchanged between plenty of the players on the ice. It has to be said, that Capitals dominated large parts of the play in the middle stanza, and the period ended with Storm further on the back foot, as both Coach Omar Pacha and Captain Trevor Johnson, headed to the box at the end of period to give the Capitals the 5 on 3 advantage.
The Storm managed to kill off the 5 on 3 penalty much to the delight of the large home crowd, and with the penalties killed, Storm were able to focus on the attack once more, and fan favourite Mark Heatley was able to put the home side 3-0 up with a fantastic shot through thr 5 hole of Fullerton, following a pass from GB International, Paul Swindlehurst. With the clock ticking down in the period, the Capitals continued to press hard for their opening goal, but it was the home side who struck home with Dziurzynski grabbing his 3rd, and the Storms 4th, with 1:16 to go in the game. With the sound of the buzzer, the Storm skated away with a much needed win and 2 points in our #FightForThePlayoffs!
Tomorrow, the Storm head north to the leagues most northernly team, the Dundee Starts, before welcoming them back to the Storm Shelter next Saturday (18th March) in the return fixture.
