Joe Morrow: Player Feature Sit-Down
As part of our ongoing series, we’re excited to bring you a special feature with one of our standout players, Joe Morrow. This sit-down is more than just a look at his career; it’s a chance to hear directly from Joe about his experiences, both on and off the ice.
From Canada to the UK: A Unique Journey
Joe’s journey to the UK is a testament to his adaptability and resilience. Growing up in Canada, he always dreamed of playing at the highest level, and his career path has taken him through the NHL, KHL, and beyond. Reflecting on his early days in the league, Joe says, “It was a great feeling to be drafted and to be part of that NHL atmosphere. It taught me so much about the game and about myself as a player.”
Having played alongside and against some of the best in the world, including the likes of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Pavel Datsyuk, Brad Marchand, and Patrice Bergeron, Joe has gained invaluable insight into what it takes to succeed at the highest level. “Sharing the ice with guys like Sid and Geno was incredible,” Joe shares. “Their dedication and passion for the game pushed me to elevate my own performance every day.”
Joe also reflects fondly on his time in Boston, where he had the opportunity to play with Marchand and Bergeron. “Bergeron is the ultimate professional,” Joe explains. “The way he carries himself both on and off the ice is something every player can look up to. And Brad—he’s got that fire, that edge to his game, but he’s also one of the smartest players I’ve ever seen. Being in that locker room with them was a privilege and a huge learning experience for me.”
Life in the UK: A Fresh Start
Since moving to the UK, Joe has embraced the new culture with enthusiasm, and the experience has allowed him to expand his horizons both professionally and personally. “I’ve really enjoyed the chance to see new places and meet new people,” he says with a smile. “Living in Manchester has been great, and there’s so much history and culture to explore. I’ve been lucky to be part of such a welcoming community.”
From traveling across Europe to enjoying quiet moments with family, Joe finds joy in embracing every opportunity. “It’s been a bit of a reset for me. The fans here, the city’s energy, and the lifestyle—it all adds up to a great experience. It’s amazing how quickly you can adjust when you have the right mindset.”
The Pressure of Being in the Spotlight
Joe acknowledges that the life of a professional athlete isn’t always easy. “You’re constantly under the microscope,” he says. “Everyone has an opinion, and sometimes it’s hard to block that out. But it’s part of the game, and you learn to deal with it.”
He credits his teammates with helping him stay focused, especially when things don’t go as planned. “We have a really strong group here, and that makes a huge difference. On tough days, we lean on each other,” he says. “Having that locker room support means everything. We’re a team both on and off the ice, and that connection is what keeps us moving forward.”
The Best Players He’s Played With and Against
When asked about the best players he’s had the privilege to share the ice with, Joe enthusiastically talks about the talents he’s had the chance to experience firsthand. “Pavel Datsyuk was an absolute magician on the ice,” he recalls. “He could do things with the puck that made you wonder if you were watching a different game. Playing against him was like a masterclass in hockey.”
Joe also reflects on the incredible talent he was fortunate to play alongside, including players like Dustin Byfuglien, Shea Weber, Brad Marchand, and Patrice Bergeron. “Each of these guys brings something special to the table,” he says. “Big Buff’s physicality and leadership, Weber’s power and precision, and Bergeron’s consistency—these guys are the real deal. And Marchand? He’s one of a kind—always keeping you on your toes and elevating the intensity of every game.”
Playoff Run with the Jets: A Standout Moment
One of the most memorable moments in Joe’s career came during the 2017-2018 Stanley Cup playoffs with the Winnipeg Jets. “That playoff run with the Jets was something special,” Joe says. “It was an incredible feeling to be a part of that team, and to contribute in such an important time. The energy in the building, the fans, the intensity—it’s what you dream of as a player.”
His performance during that run solidified his place as a key contributor to his team’s success. “The pressure was high, but it brought out the best in all of us,” Joe reflects. “Every game felt like a new opportunity to prove what we could do, and I’m proud of the way our team came together.”
Looking Ahead: The Future of Hockey and Life After the Game
While Joe is still very much focused on his game, he also looks to the future with excitement. “There’s so much more to experience and learn. Hockey has been my life, but there are always new opportunities waiting around the corner,” he says with optimism.
Whether it’s continuing to explore new cities, diving into projects off the ice, or simply enjoying time with family, Joe is enjoying every moment of his journey. “I’ve learned to appreciate the little things,” he says. “Whether it’s a quiet afternoon or a big game, I take it all in because this journey doesn’t last forever.”
