The Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm suffered a minor setback this weekend as they fell short away to the Fife Flyers in penalty shots (5-4) before losing out to the Nottingham Panthers at home 4-2 in Elite Ice Hockey League action.

Saturday saw the Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm travel north of the border to Fife to take on the Flyers, for the first time in the 76 year history of the Fife team. The Flyers, started well and within the first 5 minutes of the first period, Stockton scored off a cross ice pass from Rioux. Storm however responded immediately and within a minute had tied the score thanks to a lovely shot from Sisca. Storm’s Valcak doubled the score for Storm halfway through the first, however Fife then went on to score 2 more goals before the end of the period. Trailing 3 goals to 2, Storm pushed hard to score goal number 3, however in doing so allowed Fife an opening to score goal number 4 early in the 2nd. Sisca, in the middle of the second however was able to halve the deficit and Storm upped the pressure. The 3rd period was much the same as the first 2 periods, end to end fast paced hockey. Thanks to Caria, Storm were able to level the score 4-all with 10 minutes to go. With the score tied at the end of regulation, a 4-on-4 overtime was played, but again no goals scored. Hence, the teams went to penalty shots. David Brown of the Flyers was able to keep out all of the Storm’s attempts, while unfortunately Kalemba was un able to do the same and Fife took the extra point.

On Sunday, the 4th of October, the Manchester Storm welcomed the Nottingham Panthers to the Altrincham Ice Rink, in EIHL Challenge Cup action. Storm started the game well, dominating the ice in the first period of play. Despite this, the Panthers, thanks to their incredible netminder Wikman, were able to keep the puck out of the back of the net for the first 20min. The 2nd period started out much better for the Panthers however, as they were able to take the lead due to a defensive error by Storm which lead to Bohmbach scoring early in the 2nd. 10 minutes later, and on the PowerPlay, Luke Salazar was able to tie the game up 1 a piece for the Manchester Storm, with a blast just inside the zone. Matt Paton was able to double Storms score 4 minuets later thanks to an incredible pass off Salazar. The 3rd period however was the turning point in the game, and the Storm started to look tired, especially after retuning from Fife at 4:15 that morning. Nottingham were able to capitalise upon this and slip 3 past Storm netminder over the period to end the game 4-2 victors.

This coming weekend see the Manchester Storm at home on Saturday to the Edinburgh Capitals, before heading up north to face the Capitals again on the Sunday night.
