Last night, Storm met for the third time this season so far, this time to compete for the Challenge Cup.

The first period started off with a strong Storm side, as they did their best to stay in the offensive zone. Still tied It was Panthers, Lepine who sat the first penalty of the game, heading to the box at 7:42 for slashing.

The first blood was drawn in the 12th minute, as Betteridge slotted backdoor for the Panthers. Storm then had two powerplay opportunities, as Panthers took two penalties within a minute of each other, Kovaks for slashing and Lee for cross-checking. Despite the 5 on 3 chance, it was a strong penalty kill for Panthers and Storm didn’t manage to equalise. Storm only received one penalty in the first, when Moffatt was sent to the box for holding at 19:04.

Less than a minute into the second period, Olsen put one past Ginn, assisted by Guptill and Pither and putting the Panthers up by two goals. It was Hammond who scored Storm’s first goal of the evening, on a backdoor opportunity past Garnett, with the assists from Byers and Moffatt.

Anderson sat the second penalty for Storm, sitting at 29:43 for hooking. This didn’t hold Storm back as Hammond went on a short-handed breakaway, to be denied by Garnett. There was then opportunities for another goal, when what looked like a goal of the crossbar was called off during play, no whistle given.

Panthers were once again in danger of conceding a goal, as Doty sat two minutes for delay of game at 33:46 and Rissling for tripping at 34:03, giving Storm time on a 5 on 3 powerplay. Long managed to equalise for Storm on the powerplay, with what looked like a free for all around Garnett’s net, assisted by Bakker and Springer. The goal was challenged and reviewed but was given.

The remaining five minutes of the period, were end to end hockey. Storm’s final penalty of the game came at 36:36, handed to Hammond for delay of game.

 

Given it being a tie, things started off pretty feisty in the third period, and there were handbags around Storm’s net just three minutes in. There were opportunities on a breakout, with Moffatt and Byers heading on a 2 on 1 op, neither managing to score.

Goal three for Panthers was a five-hole goal, scored by Perlini at 44:59, putting a one goal difference between the teams. Storm then got a powerplay opportunity when Panthers, Billingsley received a penalty for tripping at 47:33. Just five minutes later there was another chance, as Farmer sat two minutes in the box for interference. AT 53:29, Storm equalised on the powerplay, scored by Captain Dane Byers, with the assists going to Ehrhardt and Moffatt.

Lepine was handed a 2+10 penalty for a boarding incident at 59:08, leaving Storm on the powerplay yet again, with less than a minute to go in regular time.

Storm had the upper hand in overtime starting 4 on 3, but didn’t manage to get through Garnett. However, it was all over by 64:06, as Long scored his second game of the night unassisted, putting the puck in the lower right hand corner and taking The Storm to victory with a 4-3 win. Relief turned into the unknown, as the goal was called under review, but was then given. Overall it was a thrilling midweek game, with Storm collecting the three points.
