It was Saturday night hockey at the Storm Shelter as the Go Goodwins Manchester Storm welcomed the Cardiff Devils in Elite Ice Hockey League action, with both teams in the hunt for points to continue their fine starts to the season.
The Storm were raring to go, and hit the ice fast in the first period. With the Devils chasing their tails, the Storm went ahead thanks to a fantastic shot by Conor Varley who slotted home between Ben Bowns leg pad and the post, in what must have been a gap cm’s wide – an INCREDIBLE shot!!
The beginning of the second period saw the visiting Devils come out flying! Clearly, what ever had been said in the locker room worked, as Jake Morissette leveled things up whilst on the power play. The play went end to end, but the Storm got themselves into penalty trouble which put the team under more pressure against a very strong Devils side.
The Devils again started the final period in full swing, and they were able to take the lead just after the middle of the period when Layne Ulmer snatched a golden chance and put the visitors in the lead for the first time in the game. The Storm continued to push hard for an equalising goal, and with 2:14 remaining on the clock, Conor Varley netted his second of the night, and what a finish it was, much to the delight of the noisy Storm fans!
The beginning of OT saw both sides going close, with the Storm having their best chance in the first 30 seconds when they made Bowns pull off a blinding save. However, the thrilling comeback tale was not to be, as the Cardiff Devils, who had just hit the crossbar moments earlier, were able to pounce on a slip up by the Storm defence and skate home with the extra point!
