Your Go Goodwins Manchester Storm secured a place in the 2017 Elite Ice Hockey League playoffs, despite going down 3-2 to the Nottingham Panthers in front of packed out Storm Shelter!

The first period saw the home side control much of the play for the opening period of the game, as they pelted the Panthers goals with shot after shot. Jindrich Pacl kept the Storm at bay. However, they continued to test Pacl, and with 5:02 to go in the 1st, Mario Trabucco broke the deadlock with a deflected shot off Pacl to give the Storm the lead. A nervous last minute saw the Storm have to kill the start of a penalty, but they were just about able to hold on as the Panthers piled on the pressure.

With news filtering through of the score in Sheffield, it was clear the Storm needed to continue to give it their all to ensure a win. However, with 14:25 to go in the period, the Panthers were able to grab an equalising goal off a Jason Williams shot. The play flowed end to end after this, with plenty of heated words exchanged between the players. Storm efforts were rewarded with another goal 6:29 from the end of the 2nd, when Trevor Johnson took aim and fired a wonderful snipe over the shoulder of Pacl to send the Shelter wild. This was however, quickly followed up by a another equalizing goal by the Panthers, by Andy Sertich!

News broke just seconds before the third period that, thanks to the Sheffield Steelers beating the Coventry Blaze by a score of 4 to 1, the Manchester Storm had qualified for the playoffs – no matter what the result! Celebrations took place around the rink, both by the visiting fans, and the ecstatic home fans. On the ice however, a problem arose with the freezing of the ice, and a decision was made by the official, the Elite League, and both teams, that the 3rd would be scrapped and the game would move straight to a shootout to avoid unnecessary risk to players on both teams.

The Storm got the proceedings under way, and Dziurzynski went wide for the opening penalty shot. Lawrence of the Panthers grabbed a goal for the visitors, before Matt Bissonnette scored one of the most incredible shootout goals. Schultz scored the 2nd of the Panthers penalty shots, before Mark Heatley was denied by the tip fo Pacl to give the Panthers the 2 points.

Storm now look ahead to a quarter final match up against the League and Challenge Cup winners – the Cardiff Devils. Firstly on the road at the Ice Arena Wales before returning home to face them in the final home game of the season on Sunday. Faceoff for this huge game is at 5:30pm and tickets can be ordered online, by calling the box office on 0161 926 8782, or in person at the Box Office!
