Samantha Rooke, a University of Salford final year student studying Journalism, speaks to Storm Legend Mike Morin ahead of this weekend’s #Morin15 jersey retirement game, about how the game has changed since he was on the ice!

Your Go Goodwin’s Manchester Storm will retire the #15 jersey on Sunday in honour of Storm legend, Mike “Kemit” Morin.

Starting his playing career in 1991, Morin, Canadian born and now a Manchester local, became a fundamental part of the club when he joined the Storm in 1996. After spending six years with the club Morin re-joined the club in 2015 becoming the Storm’s Assistant Coach.

When he first came to Storm they were playing in the Ice Hockey Super League. Through his dedication Morin proved himself to be one of the team’s most important players and played up until 2002 – when the original Storm folded.

We talked to Morin about how he feels that the sport has changed from when he played:

“I think the players are more skilled all-round, we used to have different jobs when we played, now they can all do the same jobs.”

“The nutrition and the all-round yearly fitness of the guys has changed. They certainly watch what they eat, drink and the amount of sleep they get”.

Morin explained how this differed from his playing days;

“Compared to when I played it was a little bit more loose. It was a lot of pasta and proteins but it was only on match days, these guys watch what they eat every day”.

To the delight of Morin fans the ice hockey legend returned to Manchester Storm to become Assistant Coach, a role which Morin describes still leaves him feeling like a player.

Morin explained what it is like being an Assistant Coach at the Storm,

“I love the fact that I can go and talk to the guys or the guys can come and talk to me about things, and I always had that when I played, I always had an assistant coach that I could go to when I needed”.

Here at the Storm, they have decided it is now time for the retirement of the #Morin15 jersey, sending it off will be the Sunday game against MK Lightning which will be its last appearance.
