Elite League Ice Hockey returned to the SilverBlades Ice Rink Altrincham #StormShelter this evening, as your Go Goodwins Manchester Storm came away with a 4-1 win over the Braehead Clan in the Challenge Cup!

Still missing Shane Bakker, the Storm took to the ice ready and prepared for the game ahead, after going down 7-5 the previous evening to the visitors at the Intu Braehead arena. Coach Finnerty made no changes to the line up instead, making a few changes to the lines themselves.

Storm came out flying into the period, and caused numerous problems for Nie in the Clan net. The play flowed end to end, and it took up until the 15th minute for Mike Hammond to open the scoring, with one of the most beautiful goals to have been seen here at the Shelter, going between his legs to slot the puck home past the Braehead net minder. Clan slowly began to find their “skates” towards the closing stages of the period, but Storm’s net minder, Mike Clemente, was able to deny all the chances on his net.

End to end hockey was seen for much of the second period, with both sides going close at numerous times, however it was Clan who grabbed the first goal in the second period, as Jacob Doty bounced a puck off the crossbar, and off the back of Clemente to grab the visitors opening goal. The play continued to flow end to end, with both sides again going close, however with just shy of 6 minutes remaining in the period, Matt Beca grabbed the Storm’s second of the night, to restore the Storms lead.

The third period once again saw the Storm come flying out of the locker room, and just 6 minutes into the period, doubled their lead with a poke home from Paul Swindlehurst. Clan continued to battle hard for their second of the night, but Clemente proved much more difficult to beat than the previous evening. With the clock ticking down, Clan pulled Nie to give them the extra man, but Storm were able to capitalise upon the chance, and Captain Jay Rosehill was able to slot home and give the Storm the 2 points in their home opener.

Storm now look ahead to Saturdays all important match against the Sheffield Steelers, who they beat here at the Storm Shelter in the pre-season. Tickets are on sale from the Box Office (8am to 6pm), Online by clicking here, and over the phone by calling 0161-926-8782!
