Your Go Goodwins Manchester Storm started their league campaign at the Coventry Skydome Arena this evening, with a fantastic 4-1 win over conference rivals, the Coventry Blaze.

The first period, saw plenty of movement with the puck, as both sides went close on numerous times. Blaze netminder Kevin Nastiuk and Storm’s Mike Clemente were both called into action numerous times. Despite all this action there were no fights, and more importantly, no goals!

One thing was for certain though, what the first period lacked, the second period certainly made up for. Just over a minute and a half into the period, Matt Beca broke through the Coventry defence to slot home and send the travelling Storm fans to their feet! The play continued to move end to end after this, and the Blaze thought they had scored on numerous occasions, only to have it waved off both times!

The tension continued to build following this, and finally spilt over, and both the Storm’s Gerard Hanson & Blaze’s Dax Lauwers were ejected from the game for fighting! The fight, however didn’t distract the Storm, and with 1:57 to go in the period, Beca doubled the Storms lead whilst on the power play!

The Coventry Blaze started the third period much better, and with just 5:14 gone in the period, destroyed Clemente’s chance of a “Shut Out” when Mark-Olivier Vallerand slotted home with a fantastic shot through a screen of players in front of the Storm netminder. Storm continued to battle hard for the puck, and their effort were rewarded with just under 10 minutes to go in the period, when Ryan Trenz grabbed a power play goal, before Mike Hammond scored a breakaway beauty, to give the Storm their game winning goal and a 4-1 victory over the conference rivals.

Your Go Goodwins Manchester Storm now turn their attention to Saturday the 15th of September, when they face the Coventry Blaze in a return fixture of this evenings game. This is followed the next day, by ANOTHER home fixture, as we welcome the MK Lightning to the #StormShelter for the first time!
