Your Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm are back in action in the annual New Year’s Day home game against local rivals the Sheffield Steelers in a big Elite League fixture that faces off at 5:30 pm.

Last Time: This is the second game in a home-and-home series between the sides, after the Storm travelled to Sheffield on Saturday evening in a game that ended 3-0 in favor of the Steelers. A goal in each period was enough to secure victory for Sheffield, Robert Dowd getting the scoring underway after just a minute and a half in the first period. Despite significant Storm pressure, it was the Steelers who struck next, Valdix converting early on in the second. The Steelers capitalized on a late powerplay, with Robert Dowd scoring his second of the evening with a couple of minutes to go to round out the scoring. Ervins Mustukovs earned another shutout, saving all 28 of Storm’s shots on the evening, making it over 300 minutes since he last conceded a goal. Mike Clemente turned away 19 shots on the night.

Special Teams: Special teams played a part in Saturday’s game, with Sheffield scoring on 1 of their 5 powerplays and shutting of both of Storm’s powerplays. The Steelers have the third best powerplay in the league, scoring on 23.88% of their chances. The Storm are seventh in the powerplay rankings, with a 19.82% conversion rate. The game also sees two of the best penalty-killing units go head-to-head. The Steelers sit top of the penalty kill rankings, with a 89.43% penalty kill. Storm are fourth best in the league, succeeding on 81.48% of their penalty kill situations. The Storm have scored a league-leading six shorthanded goals this season, joint with Fife.

This one looks like it’s going to be very busy, so make sure you get tickets before they all sell out!

One to watch: After scoring a double on Saturday night, Robert Dowd will be looking to repeat his performance. Those goals were his twelfth and thirteenth of the season.
