Your Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm are back in Elite League action this Saturday 21st October as the Fife Flyers take the trip down to Altrincham in a 7:00 pm faceoff.

The Flyers come into the weekend having won 3 of their first 4 league games, and have also secured their place in the Challenge Cup quarter finals. Last weekend saw them faceoff against the Belfast Giants and the Braehead Clan. Saturday’s trip to Belfast ended in a disappointing 5-0 loss for the Flyers, in a Challenge Cup game between two sides that have already secured qualification. Sunday saw the visit of rivals Braehead to the Fife Ice Arena, and it was the Flyers that romped home to a 5-1 victory. Goals coming courtesy of Peter LeBlanc, Carlo Finucci, James Isaacs, and two from Chase Schaber. It was a quiet night in nets for Andy Iles, how turned away 17 of Braehead’s 18 shots. It was a 4-point weekend last week for the Storm, after victories at home against Dundee and away in Edinburgh. Scott Pitt, Luke Moffatt, and Mike Hammond got the goals on Saturday against Dundee, taking the game to penalty shots, where Ciaran Long scored the only shot to secure the points. It was another tight game the following evening in Edinburgh, as the Storm overcame the Capitals 3-1 thanks to Dane Byers, Luke Moffatt, and Shane Bakker.

The Flyers are the only team this season that the Storm are yet to face, due to their Challenge Cup fixtures coming early in the season. Coach Todd Dutiaume has rebuilt his squad, retaining less than half of last season’s team. Returning imports include Chase Schaber, who scored 21 goals in the Elite League last season, the experienced defenceman Russ Moyer, and Shayne Stockton, who missed a long period last year due to injury. There’s also a familiar face to Storm fans, as Ricky Birzins made the switch to Fife over the summer. New faces to the Flyers include Peter LeBlanc who brings in a wealth of AHL, Finnish Liiga, and Swedish Allsvenskan experience. Dutiaume has always looked to build his team around strong netminding, and this season is no different. Andy Iles, a former USA Junior International, fills the role for the Flyers this season.

Storm will be missing Captain Jay Rosehill this weekend, after a suspension picked up in Edinburgh, so the team will need the fans to be the extra man this weekend, and keep the Storm at the top of the table.

One to watch: The signing of Liam Heelis may have gone under the radar of many fans over the summer; the Canadian forward coaching last season rather than playing, after spending 5 years in the Canadian University Leagues, however he has made quite an impression this season already, with 7 points from just 4 league appearances.
