It’s a trip to Belfast up next for your Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm as they face the Giants this Sunday in a 4 pm faceoff in the SSE Arena.

The Giants had Saturday night off, however they hosted the Nottingham Panthers on Wednesday night in a tight game that required overtime to separate the sides. After an early Panthers goal, Colin Shields and Darcy Murphy pulled the game in the Giants favour, before Nottingham scored three straight goals. Goals from Sebastien Sylvestre and Blair Riley took the game to overtime, but it was the Panthers who took the extra point. That result put the Giants in third place, 3 points behind the Storm who have a game in hand. Manchester faced bottom of the table Edinburgh on Saturday night at the Storm Shelter, and secured a 7-1 victory. Scott Pitt, Dane Byers, and Gerard Hanson got two goals each, with Matt Beca scoring the other goal in a result that sees the Storm move back to the top spot in the table, with 24 points.

This is the second meeting of the season between the sides, and the first in Belfast. The previous meeting ended 2-1 to the Storm in a tight game in Planet Ice Altrincham. Jonathan Ferland got the scoring underway for the Giants early in the first period. A goalless second period followed before the Storm finally got on the board half way through the third period, Paul Swindlehurst getting the goal. This was followed up by a Jay Rosehill goal two minutes later on, Ciaran Long getting the helper. Mike Clemente made 28 saves in a good performance in nets for the Storm, while Jackson Whistle made 17 saves in the Giants goal.

One to watch: Colin Shields is Belfast’s all-time top goals-, assists-, and points-scorer, and has started the season well, scoring 11 goals and 10 assists in the first 18 games of the season.
