Pink the Rink 2015

Later this month, your Go Goodwins Coaches sponsored Manchester Storm will be helping raise funds for The Christie & The University of Manchester, as we go pink to help stamp out cancer.

Earlier this year, the Goodwins held a charity dinner for two University of Manchester researchers, Dr Kim Linton & Professor John Radford, to help fund their research into Lymphoma at Christie’s. Through their research, they are improving the outcome for patients with lymphoma through internationally competitive research. The aim of Dr Linton and Professor Radford is to develop individualised, effective and safe treatments for patients with blood cancers.

Work is ongoing in the laboratory, looking at lymphoma tumours at a genetic level to help to identify which patients are likely to do well with existing treatments, and those for whom alternative approaches may be more appropriate. This work is referred to as molecular tumour profiling & the identification of disease biomarkers. Breakthroughs in the laboratory are translated to the clinic to help develop personalised treatment.

A recent example of the work being done by Dr Linton & Professor Radford involved a clinical trial to develop PET scanning as an imaging disease biomarker in early stage Hodgkin lymphoma. Through PET, we are now able to identify patients with a good prognosis, who may not require the addition of radiotherapy after chemotherapy.

Dr Linton & Professor Radford’s team has an international reputation in clinical research, to help develop novel treatments for lymphoma patients, both to improve cure rates and to prolong a good quality of life in individuals whose disease is resistant to conventional treatments.

All of this vital research requires funding to enable the team to continue to make advances in understanding and improving treatment for lymphoma patients. All donations raised on the 24th of October on our game against the Fife Flyers will be split 50/50 between the University of Manchester and the Christie, to help enable them to continue with this research.

So wear pink & dig deep as the Storm go to battle with its toughest challenge yet, but together: WE WILL WIN!

Further details about Pink Night 2015 will be announced at a later date.
