On a wet and windy Saturday night in Nottingham, the Go Goodwins Manchester Storm blew into town to take on the Panthers in our only League and Cup “double up” match of the season.

The Storm started out strong, seeing off a strong and physical Panthers side that looked to out muscle the Storm, playing in their purple CC jerseys, off the puck. Despite this, the Storm had the majority of chances in the opening 5 minutes, testing Wiikman in the Panthers net with plenty of differing types of shots.

However, the Panthers were the first on the board when Waugh slotted a lovely shot up over the arm of Clemente in the Storms net. With 13.1 left in the opening period, and with emotions running high, Storm forward Eric Neilson & former NHL tough guy, Brian McGrattan, went toe to toe in a superb centre ice battle that ignited the Storm bench and the Storm and Panthers fans in equal measure! It didn’t take the Storm long to get on the board after, as “Super” Mario Trabucco blasted past Wiikman in the Panthers net, much to the delight of the large travelling contingent of Storm fans! The Storm were suddenly 2-1 up after Captain Trevor Johnson shot from the blue line right under the pads of Wiikman, but the Panthers responded in kind when Lawrence, levelled the scores 2-2 with just over 3min to go in the first.

The second period saw the Storm start on a 5-on-3 PK, as Pacha, Valcak, and Dziurzynski all sat for numerous infringements. IT didn’t take the Panthers long to capitalise on the 2 man advantage as Nikiforuk scored the Panthers 3rd of the night less than 40s from the start of the period. Farmer then added the Panthers 4th, as the Storm struggled to stay out of the box. Dziurzynski then cut the Panthers lead to 1 when he slotted home just moments later. The play then went end to end as both teams look to score the next goal, with the Storm taking some fantastic shots on Wikman in the Panthers net, however, with less than 9 seconds to go in the 2nd period, Lawrence popped in a PP goal that gave the panthers their 5th of the night.

With the score 5-3 in favour of the host, the Storm came out charged, and with just less than 3 minutes gone in the period, Swindlehurst popped one home to cut the Panthers lead to 1. This however didn’t last long, when Lawrence grabbed his 3rd of the night moments later to restore the Panthers 2 goal lead. Swindlehurst scored his second minutes later to grab the Storms 5th, and ultimately last goal of the evening, before the Panthers Lawrence & Moran added to their tally to make the final score 8-5 in favour of the hosts.
