Match Report – Downed by the Clan

Your Go Goodwin sponsored Manchester Storm fell a goal short at the Intu Braehead Arena, as the Braehead Clan won the first encounter of these 2 franchises 4-3, in what was to be one of the most thrilling games so far this season.

The Storm were without British defenceman #13 Davy Phillips while the Clan were without a few of their key players. Both sides were on the hunt for 2 points after having disappointing losses on Sunday, the Storm at the Edinburgh Capitals, and the Clan at the Dundee Stars.

The match started out well for the Clan, who thanks to a goal from Matt Haywood within the first 8 minutes of play, were ahead 1-0. Storm pushed hard though and after 10, Matt Paton tied the game 1-a-piece. The remainder of the period was end to end plays, with both teams evenly matched.

The Second period couldn’t have been better for the Manchester Storm, as both Grant Toulmin & Matt Caria scored at either end of the period, to make the score 3-1 to the Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm. The play from both teams increased in both speed and physicality and the penalties began to mount up against both teams.

Just as the 2nd period was all about the Storm, the 3rd was all about the Braehead Clan. Within 12 seconds of the 3rd starting, the Clan had halved the deficit to 1 – thanks to a goal by Stefan Meyer. Scott Pitt went on to tie the game up 3-3 just before the 7th min of the period. The final nail in the coffin of the 3rd was Chris Burton of the Clan scoring with 3 min to go from time, to make the score, and final result 4-3 for the Braehead Clan.

Despite the loss, the Manchester Storm should take MANY positives away from what was an entertaining game from both sides. The Storm looked sharp, and it’s clear to see that the team is gelling and settling well.
