This Sunday night is Hockey Night in Manchester as your Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm are back on home ice, facing off against the Sheffield Steelers at 5:30 pm in a pre-season exhibition game.

It’s a day of firsts at the Storm Shelter, the first chance for the Storm fans to see their new look team on home ice, the first time the new jumbotron is used in anger, and the first time the Storm are wearing special Manchester Pride jerseys. The one-off game worn jerseys go on sale at midday on Monday.

The sides faced off last night at the Sheffield Arena, with the Steelers raising their playoff banner before the game. Storm got the scoring underway through Matt Bissonnette, with Hammond and Beca grabbing the assists. Steelers tied it up thanks to Mathieu Roy, before Andreas Valdix got his first of the evening to make it 2-1 to the Yorkshire side. Beca grabbed a goal in the second period to make it 2-2, combining well with Matt Bissonnette again. The Steelers then jumped ahead 4-2 through Valdix and Fretter. Ashley Smith got his first appearance for the Storm, replacing Mike Clemente at the beginning of the third, while Brad Day went into the Steelers net. Steelers got another goal in the third period, before Chris Auger got his first 2 goals in pre-season to make it 5-4 to the Steelers, which is how the game ended.

One of the biggest positives during this pre-season has been the instant chemistry between the two Matts, Beca and Bissonnette, and Mike Hammond. This line has combined for 4 goals already this pre-season, 2 goals against both Coventry, in mid-week, and Sheffield last night. Early signs are this line could be a lethal combination this coming season.

One to watch: Andreas Valdix picked up 2 goals last night, and returns to the Steelers after missing a substantial part of last season to injury. The Swedish forward put up over a point a game last season and has continued his good form into this pre-season.
