Match Preview: Storm vs Panthers

TICKETS: The Go Goodwin’s Manchester Storm are back in action this Sunday 9th October with a Challenge Cup match against the Nottingham Panthers. Face off is at 5.30pm and tickets can be ordered online or by calling the box office on 0161 926 8782, or in person at the box office.

Your Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm take on the Nottingham Panthers for the second time in 8 days this Sunday in a Challenge Cup group B match up, facing off at 5:30 pm.

The last game between the two teams finished 8-5 in a thrilling game that could have gone either way. The lead swung between the two teams in the first two periods, before two early 3rd period goals from Paul Swindlehurst gave the Storm a chance as they cut the Panthers’ lead to 6-5, however it wasn’t to be as Nottingham got on the board two more times in the final period through Chris Lawrence and Brad Moran. Nottingham lost Stephen Schultz to injury during this game, and have drafted in former Boston Bruins’ Petr Kalus as injury cover.

Both teams were in action last night, Storm taking the long trip to Fife and Nottingham facing Dundee at home. Manchester skated away with a 7-0 loss in Fife, while the Panthers on the other hand edged a win against the Stars with a score of 2-1, both their goals were scored by J. Dimmen.

Both teams have Challenge Cup qualification within their sights, last season’s champions Nottingham are sitting second in Group B with 6 points from 5 games, 2 points behind first-placed Sheffield with a game in hand. Manchester are in 3rd, a point behind the Panthers with a game in hand. A win for either team would be a massive step towards qualification and a quarter-final matchup against a Group A team.

Last weeks game between the two teams was an absolute barnburner in Nottingham, and this one should be no different.

One to watch: Petr Kalus joins the club this week as injury cover. He has previously spent time in the NHL, with Boston and Minnesota, the AHL, the Swedish Hockey League, and numerous other top European leagues. During his last stint in Nottingham he showed silky smooth hands, and ended up with 40 points in 44 games.
