Your Go Goodwins sponsored Manchester Storm renew acquaintances with the Coventry Blaze this evening, facing off at the SkyDome at 5:15 pm in the second matchup between the teams this weekend.

The two teams familiarised themselves with each other last night at the Storm Shelter, where Coventry skated away with a 0-2 victory, with goals from Jordan Pietrus & Brian Robinson securing victory for the Blaze.

Although they find themselves towards the bottom of the league, the Blaze are a quality outfit and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Both teams are built on the back of quality goaltending in Mike Clemente and Brian Stewart. The netminders had a similar route to the Elite League, after a successful stint in the NCAA, Clemente and Stewart moved to the ECHL and AHL leagues for a few seasons. A season in Europe followed, Denmark for Clemente and Germany for Stewart, before joining the Elite League. Stewart, an aggressive netminder who likes to come out and challenge the shooter, has now been in the league for 2 and a bit seasons and has been one of the league’s top ‘tenders during that time. Clemente has already impressed in his short time at the Storm, highlights include his first shutout against Fife and a fantastic quadruple save against the Giants last weekend.

A key area for both teams has been the scoring from their defencemen. Blueliners Phillips, Johnson, and Varley have already managed double digit points scoring this season, whilst the Blaze have been relying a lot on Josh Godfrey for points. Godfrey, won once registered with the hardest shot in the ECHL, is already close to overtaking his points haul from last season in a much shorter time. He is backed up by Jim Jorgensen, who is also capable at chipping with points from defence.

It’s not often in the Elite League that teams faceoff against each other on successive nights, providing the opportunity for one team to gain instant revenge. These games often take on a ‘playoff’ feeling, this is definitely not one to miss.

ONE TO WATCH: Captain Jordan Pietrus leads by example and has been one of the top performers for the Blaze this season. He has become a fans favourite during his time in Coventry and often pops up with timely goals.
