Your Go Goodwins Manchester Storm get the league campaign up and running this Saturday as we take the long bus trip up to the Braehead Arena this Saturday for a 7pm faceoff against the Braehead Clan, before returning to play the Coventry Blaze at home on Sunday (5.30pm Face Off)

Despite a shaky start, the Clan have quality throughout their roster. Goals in their competitive matches, have come from the returning Alex Leavitt and Scott Pitt as well as new additions Matt Beca and Craig Peacock. Pitt has started the season well, bagging himself 2 goals already. On the back end, netminder Michal Zajkowski has a wealth of European experience including several seasons in the Swedish SHL and Allsvenskan, whilst summer recruits Trevor Hendrikx, Lee Baldwin, and Kyle Wharton bring a lot of size and strength to the defensive lines.

Storm come off the back of a successful weekend, where we beat the Cardiff Devils 4-2 in our solitary game. The Dziurzynski-Bissonnette-Trabucco line was on fire, continuing their pre-season form, with EIHL player of the week Dziurzynski getting 2 goals, whilst Bissonnette and Trabucco grabbed a goal apiece. That line was not the only reason for Storm fans to smile last weekend, restricting Cardiff to only 2 goals required a team effort with all players contributing to a solid defensive performance.

There were 2 other key factors for Storm’s win last weekend; special teams and netminding. Storm managed to grab both a powerplay goal and a shorthanded goal, whilst not conceding a goal during Cardiff’s 4 powerplay opportunities. In net, Mike Clemente was the deserved man of the match, turning away 43 of Cardiff’s 45 shots.

Both teams will be looking to get their league campaigns kickstarted this weekend, with the Clan looking to stop their early losing streak and Storm looking to gain some revenge over a team that got the better of us 6 times last season.

ONE TO WATCH: Alex Leavitt was Braehead’s top point scorer last season, notching 23 goals and 50 assists in 58 games. A fast-skating forward, he has also spent time in the AHL and the German DEL.
