In a fog hit match at the Coventry Skydome, the Coventry Blaze and your Manchester Storm battled it out to an unfamiliar “draw” in the final pre-season game of 2016, before the Storms season gets underway this Saturday at home against the Cardiff Devils. (7pm F/O)

Your Go Goodwins Manchester Storm started the period off well, with end to end hockey being played by both sides. Trevor Johnson’s cross ice passes to the forwards spurred on the attack, whilst Phil Spanswick defended the Storms net from the quick attacks of the Blaze. However, the Blaze were able to get the first goal on the board, when #18 Bjorn Bombis blasted past Spanswick in the Storm net to put the home side 1-0 up with less than 5 minutes to go in the 1st period.

The Second period saw the home side double their lead, when Robin Bergman slotted past Spanswick in the Storm net, whilst the Blaze were on a penalty kill and short handed. The Storm weren’t done however, and minutes later Paul Phillips scored with a beautiful shot that beat Marr in the Blaze net to half the deficit! Moments later, his University of Salford classmate, Mark Heatley levelled things up, much to the excitement of the traveling Storm fans.

Jack Prince got the scoring underway in the third, with what might well be one of the best goals the Storm have seen since the teams return. Out at the face-off zone, Marr was beaten and with a powerful flick of the wrist from Prince & the puck hit the back of the net before the Blaze goalie or the travelling Storm fans, had realised what had happened! The Blaze and Storm then continued to skate end to end, when not trying to clear the dense fog that kept setting in. The Blaze scored what was to be the final goal of the night, when Matt Marquardt launch one through the fog past Spansiwck to tie things up 3-3.

With the persistent fog, and the fact this was only a friend, the referee called it a draw at the end of the 60 minutes, and both sets of fans went home happy with what they had seen on the ice!
