On Wednesday the 14th of February, your Go Goodwins Manchester Storm hosted a #BloodDonation night for the NHS Blood and Transplant service. As part of the night, the Storm invited Charming, a young boy who suffers from Sickle Cell disease, down to the game as our guest. Following the game, Storm revieced this email thanking not only the club, but fans, for supporting NHS Blood & Transplant. This is his email:

Through Simon Bailey to all Ice Hockey players of both the Manchester Storm and the Coventry Blaze, and to everyone that was in the stadium on the 14th February 2018, including the NHS officials of Blood Donation Team.

I and my family are delighted to say thank you for making me your guest of honour in that epoch-making match between two teams of Ice Hockey titans aimed at promoting blood donation in the Uk. Thank you very much.

But kindly lend me your time to express how much I appreciate the whole event by speaking on the generosity of our blood donors which was the basis of yesterday’s program.

Donation in general term is an act of voluntary giving of valuable something by someone to others who are in need of it. The valuable thing can be in various forms, sizes and categories. It may be in material form like money, food, clothing and shelter. It may also be in form of expertise like skilful services and counselling.

However, every act of giving has a peculiar role to play in the life of the receiver. For example:

(1) if you give money to the needy, you will succeed in empowering them to be able to actualise their desire for the sum

(2) if you give them food, you will succeed in strengthening them and invigorating their spirit, body and soul altogether

(3) if you give them clothes, you will succeed in covering their shame and protecting them from cold

(4) if you give them shelter, you will succeed in integrating them to yourself and in helping to restore their human dignity

(5) if you render your skilful service to them, you will succeed in helping to boost their morale and in helping to chat a good course for their personal developments.

But above all kinds of giving, is giving of one’s own blood as a donation to save life. For it is when there is life that all other acts of giving can be performed and be appreciated. Money is given to the living; food is fed only the one that has life. Clothe is of no essence to the dead. For the dead does not know shame and does not feel any weather. They do not desire any shelter to keep their heads and to them any counsel is useless. They do not see any of skilfulness we might demonstrate in their lying state. I have not said this to disrespect our dead.

As a matter of fact, the best we can do to people is to save their life. And that is exactly what our Blood Donors are doing. Their blood is the life that somebody like me lives upon. Their Charity is the best to people like me.

So, while I appreciate all acts of giving, I must let you know that they that give blood are, at least, one step higher in the act of philanthropy. For they supply life to those that would have died before anyone could find them to show any other kindness.

Therefore, on behalf of all beneficiaries of donated blood, I say a very big Thank You to all our Donors for their very special kindness. In the same way, I will like to profoundly appreciate Manchester Storm Ice Hockey Team and Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey Team, who threw their weight on our side by using their skills in yesterday’s match to campaign for more blood donation, after many of them have already personally donated their blood to us.

Thanks to everyone that was involved yesterday, including the spectators, teams’ fans and their officials, as well as the NHS Blood Donation Official Team.

Thank you all.

GIVE BLOOD, SAVE A LIFE.
